Are you Afraid of the dentist? If you want to find a pain free dentist or a Qualified Sedation Dentist in Marrickville, Sydney, the team at Garners Dental have many years of experience of working with anxious patients, we can help you too.

Fear of pain is the main reason people avoid seeing the dentist but the good news is we offer a number of medications and techniques — used alone or in combination — that can reduce or eliminate pain and control anxiety during most procedures.

Medications used for Pain Free Dentistry

Most patients are happily treated with a topical anaesthetic. Topical anaesthetics are applied with a swab to numb the gums in the area of the mouth where the dental work will be done. Once the topical anaesthetic has completely numbed the area, an injection with a local anaesthetic, such as Lidocaine is administered. In truth people rarely feel the injection after the topical anaesthetic has numbed the gum but some people fear

the needle more than the pain, and if that includes you, don’t worry, you are not alone and we have solutions for that too.

Each patient is unique and so are our treatment plans.

Each patient is unique. Garners dentists are trained to provide a myriad of protocols to meet your individual needs. That means we take into account whatever medications you may be taking, what dental treatments you need and the years since your last visit to the dentist before recommending a safe, effective and painless way to get the smile you’ve always wanted.
Sedatives can be given to patients a variety of ways, including by mouth, under the tongue, inhaled through the nose or intravenously (through the veins). While many of those receiving sedation at a dental surgery will take the medication orally, one of the most effective methods is Nitrous oxide which is an odourless and colourless gas. Dentistry has relied upon nitrous oxide since 1844.

Many people fear an injection, especially in the mouth. But have no fear we can make it painless.

Nitrous oxide (also called laughing gas) is one of the safest anaesthetics available. It is applied through a mask that fits snugly over the nose, approximately five minutes before the dental procedure. We can vary the depth of sedation depending on your level of anxiety.

Effects wear off quickly after the gas is turned off. This is the only form of sedation under which patients can drive after the procedure and can eat food within a 12-hour period of the procedure. With IV, oral and general

anaesthesia, the patient cannot drive following the procedure or eat after midnight the night before the procedure.

What is Relaxation Dentistry?

Nitrous oxide inhalation sedation has helped many people who have avoided dental treatment to overcome their dental anxiety. It helps people feel relaxed which is why it is often called relaxation dentistry, and is one of the most common forms of sedation used in by dentists.

Which Patients should use Nitrous Oxide?

Relaxation dentistry can help you to receive the dental care you need and is a preferred option for people who have any of these issues:

  • A fear of needles and shots
  • A high level of fear or anxiety about going to the dentist
  • A strong dislike of the noises, smells and taste associated with dental care
  • An overactive gag reflex
  • Complex dental problems
  • Difficulty in getting numb
  • Have suffered past traumatic dental experiences
  • Need to squeeze several procedures into a limited time period
  • TMJ-related difficulties where it is uncomfortable to open their mouth for extended periods
  • Very sensitive teeth

Nitrous oxide is often used in paediatric dentistry

Nitrous oxide is often used in paediatric dentistry so that a child’s early experience of going to the dentist is not a traumatic one, especially if they require a significant procedure.

Nitrous oxide is often used in paediatric dentistry so that a child’s early experience of going to the dentist is not a traumatic one, especially if they require a significant procedure.

Children often benefit from having sedation dentistry to dispel their anxiety and make their treatment painless.

A young girl wakes up after sedation and immediately after treatment, she is uneffected by the gas.

Dentistry has been using nitrous oxide since 1844. It is safe, extensively tested and highly effective.

How long do the effects of Nitrous Oxide last?

Nitrous oxide’s sedation effect is felt within minutes, and the effect wears off within minutes after the gas is stopped. The sedation effect takes anywhere from 30 seconds to three or four minutes to begin. The patient’s cheeks and gums will also begin to feel numb in about a third of the patients. After treatment, patients are free of the gas’ effects.

Laughing gas precautions and benefits

Two hours prior to use of the gas, patients should not eat. Nitrous oxide sedation has few if any side effects and produces no known allergic response. However, high doses can cause nausea in some patients. About 10% of patients do not achieve a nitrous oxide sedation benefit

Why Patients Like Oral Sedation

Patients love the benefits of oral sedation. You are responsive the whole time. You can answer questions and have no problem opening your mouth when the dentist says “open wide”.

What patients like most, is the amnesia effect. You simply don’t remember the sights and sounds that come with a visit to the dentist. In fact, hours seem like minutes, which is a huge benefit if you want to get a lot of work done in one visit. The team at our surgery take very good care of you too! You’re never left alone and all of your needs are met.
Garners Dental patients tell us, the next day is amazing; their mouth is totally comfortable, they feel invigorated and they get to show off their new smile.
There are so many reasons to smile; isn’t it time you restored yours?

Sedation or Sleep Dentistry Marrickville

Why Do Dentists Do Sedation?

A regular dental checkup will find signs of tooth decay ealy and minimise the use of a drill. But some people fear the drill so much it distresses them just to see the dentist pick it up, like the woman in this picture. If the thought of any dental work distresses you, ask us about sedation dentistry, it will change your dental experience and you probably won't remember the drill.

Most of the time when your dentist uses a drill to cut away tooth decay it really doesn’t hurt. But if the thought of a drill distresses you, ask us about sedation.

Many people fear dental procedures. In fact a university in Sweden estimated that 1 in 20 people are extremely (they used the word “deathly”) afraid of going to the dentist.

There are many reasons why, for example;

  • They worry about the pain
  • They might feel scared they will want to stop mid procedure,
  • They fear the potential discomfort.
And you may have other ones, such as a bad experience when you were young or you read a horror story about a bad experience. However, what a lot of people don’t know is, patients can choose sedation or sleep dentistry as an effective way to minimize their dental anxiety, and a lot do. Sedation dentistry can definitely help patients feel more relaxed during dental work, and this article may help you work out if it the right choice for you?

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation or Sleep dentistry involves using sedatives and pain relievers to help dental patients relax during dental examinations. Usually, patients will remain awake and alert, they just won’t experience the overwhelming anxiety they fear.

With sedation, the dental anaesthetist administers a drug before or during the dental procedure. Only one type — general anaesthesia — renders the patient completely unconscious. The other forms will relax you, but won’t knock you out completely.

For anxious patients, sedation dentistry is a good solution and quite a pleasant experience.

Nitrous Oxide gas – reduces anxiety about dental treatment

Who Needs Sedation Dentistry?

Patients who consider sedation dentistry often have different reasons for their interest, such as the following:

  • Phobia related to dental procedures
  • Bad experience with dental work in the past
  • Particularly sensitive teeth (oral nerves)
  • Have a bad gag reflex
  • Need a large amount of dental work completed
  • Small mouth that becomes sore during dental work
  • Resistance to local anaesthetic or fear of having a needle
  • General anxiety disorder
When major dental work is required sedation not only reduces anxiety but will avoid restlessness during a long procedure and has other benefits to both the patient and the dentist. If you or a family member need major dental work call Garners Dental and ask about sedation for your treatment.

A long dental treatment is not a pleasant experience and can be made stress free and more comfortable with sedation.

If you recognize yourself in any of those problem areas, consider talking to us about sedation dentistry.

Dental Procedures for Anxious Patients

Dental sedation can help patients get through many types of dental work, such as root canals, tooth extractions, dental implantation, and more. However, it’s typically not offered for regular dental cleanings, X-rays, and other routine care.

However, in cases of extreme anxiety, it may be a viable reason for sedation during those procedures as well..
Sedation or Sleep dentistry can help you:

  • Relax and calm your nerves,
  • Feel more comfortable with the dental procedure
  • Avoid restlessness as you go through a long procedure
  • Control a bad gag reflex
When major dental work is required sedation not only reduces anxiety but will avoid restlessness during a long procedure and has other benefits to both the patient and the dentist. If you or a family member need major dental work call Garners Dental and ask about sedation for your treatment.

A long dental treatment is not a pleasant experience and can be made stress free and more comfortable with sedation.

Sedation dentistry helps minimize pain and discomfort during dental treatment. Unlike deep sedation, where dentists use general anaesthesia, conscious sedation dentistry calms you without rendering you otherwise unresponsive. You will still be able to answer questions, ask questions, respond to touch, and communicate any discomfort you may be experiencing to your sedation dentist.

What Types of Sedation Drugs Are Used in Dentistry?

Relaxation Options for oral care

Inhalation Sedation to help you relax – also called nitrous oxide or laughing gas.

You breathe nitrous oxide — otherwise known as “laughing gas” which is combined with oxygen through a mask that’s placed over your nose. The gas helps you relax. Your dentist can control the amount of sedation you receive, and the gas tends to wear off quickly.

Oral sedation drugs  are usually taken either the night before the treatment or immediately before the dental appointment to help relax you and minimize pain.

Deep sedation and general anaesthesia. ou will get medications that will make you either almost unconscious or totally unconscious during the procedure. While you are under general anaesthesia, you cannot easily be awakened until the effects of the anaesthesia wears off or is reversed with medication.

Regardless of which type of sedation you receive, you’ll also typically need a local anaesthetic – a numbing medication at the site where the dentist is working in the mouth — to relieve pain if the procedure causes any discomfort.

Can Any Dentist Perform Sedation?

No, most dentists use a dentist anaesthesiologist, who is specially trained to give all levels of sedation and anaesthesia to both children and adults.

How Safe Is Sedation Dentistry?

There is always a risk in getting anaesthesia whether for dental or medical reasons. It is usually safe, though, when given by an experienced anaesthesiologist.

However, certain people, such as those who are obese or who have obstructive sleep apnoea, should talk to their doctor before having sedation. That’s because they are more likely to develop complications from the anaesthesia.

Before the procedure, your dentist should go over your medical history. Your dentist should also determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for sedation and ask about any medications you’re currently taking.

Quick Summary – Oral Sedation for Adult and Paediatric Dentistry

If you happen to be someone who hasn’t been to the dentist in a while because you’re too afraid to go, we have good news for you.

How do you react when the dentist says I'll give you an injection to dull the pain? Does the sight of the syringe cause fear to rise up and an urgent need to get up and run away. Some dental patients can't control their fear of the needle, its not their fault but thats when sedation can be a good solution.

If you feel uncontrolable fear at the sight of a syringe, ask us about sedation dentistry.

First, dental phobia is real. Someone who experiences dental phobia can have a negative response to even entering a dental office.

But dental health is a crucial part of your overall health, so you need to make and keep your regular dental appointments.

Garners Dental provides many options for anxious patients so please discuss with us what options are best suited to help you manage the stress of having dental procedures.

One such option is sleep dentistry, also known as conscious sedation or sedation dentistry.

If you struggle with dental fear and anxiety, there are better options for dealing with the fear besides staying away from the dentist.

Sleep dentistry may be the solution you need to help you protect your dental health while also protecting your emotional health.

Have you ever felt the warmth, the inner happiness a person bestows on you when they flash a beaming smile at you?
I’m sure you have seen the powerful effects of a radiant smile to make other people happy.

But, do you know, smiling is also good for you?

Why Smiling is Good For You

Smiles don’t just light up your face, they release feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine, endorphins and serotonin.

This not only relaxes your body, but it can also lower your heart rate and blood pressure.

So, yes, it’s a fact, the act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 99.7% of the population perceives “smile” as an important social asset and those who have a good smile are believed to possess positive attributes that make them look more beautiful, successful, smarter, happier, interesting, wealthy, and more appealing.

The question is why don’t people smile more often? They know it feels good and they see it makes other people happy but what they show is the thin line of tightened lips where there should be a big broad smile.

Apart from reasons that are not treated by a dentist, such as depression, the main reason is unease about the look of their smile. And one of the most cited reasons for that, is teeth that look discoloured or stained. That’s why teeth whitening is one of the most searched for terms in Google.

Little Known Facts about Teeth Whitening

The truth is, teeth are not naturally perfectly white in most cases, yet it is common for people to feel that they could improve their smile with brighter, whiter teeth.

That’s why over the counter teeth whitening kits are so popular but there are issues that you need to consider when going down this route.

Teeth whitening can make a huge difference, not just in how you look but in how you feel about yourself and how much happier you are to smile and laugh. Try it now, call Garners Dental for your teeth whitening experience.

Teeth whitening is the quickest confidence boost you can get.

The Best DIY Teeth Whitening Kits

In Australia, only a dental practitioner may provide products that release more than 6% hydrogen peroxide, some in-chair whitening systems use 35% hydrogen peroxide. At this concentration, the hydrogen peroxide can effectively permeate deep into the enamel whereas weaker concentrations only act on the surface of the tooth enamel.

What’s the Difference Between In-

Chair Teeth Whitening and DIY At Home Kits?

Many people think they are the same because they both aim to bleach or whiten their teeth. To some degree they are but it really depends on which one suits your needs best. For this reason we offer potential clients a teeth whitening consult so we can offer you the best solution depending on your needs and the type of whitening you need.

Does Whitening Work on All Teeth?

Both in-chair and at home methods work by releasing hydrogen peroxide, but in-chair systems tend to use products that release higher levels of hydrogen peroxide which can only be applied by a dentist and effectively permeate deep into the enamel.

In Chair teeth withening is much more effective that home teeth whitening kits and uses ultraviolet light at the end of the procedure to produce a whiter effect.

The teeth whitening procedure is quite different when done at the dental surgery which is why it produces much better resilts

Researchers at the School of Dentistry, Showa University, suggest home systems should be used under the supervision of a dentist. Whitening products bought over the counter, when used excessively, could lead to damage to your teeth over time.

Another reason to do your teeth whitening under the supervision of a dentist, even if you are going to use an at home kit, is that dentists will take a mould of your teeth and use that to make a whitening tray. This ensures the treatment touches only your teeth and not your gums. It is important that hydrogen peroxide isn’t left in contact with gums for a long time as this can cause burns.

Why You Should See a Dentist Before You Start Teeth Whitening

Before you undergo any course of teeth whitening, it is a good idea to have a check-up to make sure your mouth is healthy. (See our article on General dental check-ups). Identifying any dental health issues beforehand will reduce the risk of experiencing any surprises.

Does Tooth Whitening Affect Dental Restorations such as Caps and Veneers?

One important issue you should be aware of with any type of whitening treatment, is that dental restorations, such as tooth-coloured fillings, veneers and crowns (caps), won’t change colour, as the whitening only takes effect on natural teeth.

This can result in a mismatch between the whitened natural teeth and any such restorations. It’s a factor to consider when buying over the counter teeth whitening products as you might not be able to predictably identify which teeth will not whiten. When we do a teeth whitening consult with you, we look into all these matters and discuss the best way to get the outcome you want.

At Garners Dental in Marrickville, we have a number ways, ranging from in-chair teeth whitening to at home kits you can use under our supervision to safely remove the surface stains and the internal discolouration, leaving you with a whiter, more radiant smile.

The importance of regular dental check-ups

Every patient has heard their dentist talk about the importance of having regular dental check-ups and we know that many people wonder if they are really necessary? But those that do have them, learn the reason why. It is because they rarely have unexpected problems. Their oral health is good, and that is mainly due to the regular check-ups.

Benefits of seeing a dentist

At Garners dental we aim to make every experience a happy one for our clients. People who have their twice yearly checkup usually require less dental work and that contributes to their happiness.

Getting a regular checkup usually means no unexpected and costly surprises so our clients leave happy and healthy.

For example, it is possible to have dental problems and not experience any pain, making some think that they don’t need a check-up. When you have a dental check-up we do more than clean your  teeth. Check-ups are often a preventive appointment to determine the current oral health of patients. More important, check-ups not only support good oral health, they also support their overall general health.

How many dental check-ups should you have per year?

The general answer to this question is at least two. Getting a minimum of two dental exams per year is a critical part of preventive dental care for everyone, even those who are very regular with their dental hygiene practices at home.

Here’s why.

Benefits of Teeth Cleaning – Only a Dentist can Remove Tartar

Plaque needs to be removed from teeth frequently (see our article “Why You Get Cavities”). If it isn’t removed often enough, it can harden into tartar and lead to cavities and gum disease. Even those who brush and floss daily – and do a great job at these tasks – can’t remove tartar. Dental instruments and tools are needed to deep clean your teeth, which is where having a twice yearly check-up comes in.

When people don't have a regular dental checkup they will usually experience a build up of tartar around the teeth. This is not only uncomfortable and unsightly but dangerous as it is the cause of many dental diseases including gum disease. Tartar can only be removed by a dentist with the right tools, it is not possible to remove it by brushing or flossing alone.

Only a Dentist can Remove Tartar Build up. No amount of brushing and flossing can do it.

Dental check-ups help prevent issues like cavities and gum disease. And, for existing cavities or gum disease, check-ups can catch them at the start of their development and treat them at the beginning, avoiding progression into more serious issues.

Dental Examinations also give your dentist a chance to detect other oral health problems early, which is when they are most treatable with minimum procedures, preventing them from escalating into something more severe and therefore more costly to treat.

In addition to maintaining your oral health, having regular dental exams provides other health benefits. Since signs and symptoms of other systemic diseases, such as diabetes and lupus, can show up in the mouth first, a dental exam can be the first indication of these diseases, enabling you to seek medical treatment in the early stages.

What to Expect at a Routine Dental Exam

First, the dentist or hygienist will clean your teeth and check for cavities and any signs of gum disease. The dentist will also evaluate your risk of developing other oral problems and check your face, neck and mouth for abnormalities. If necessary, dental X-rays or other diagnostic procedures may also be performed.

We’ll also discuss your diet, oral hygiene habits and other lifestyle factors that can affect oral health. And, of course, we’ll answer any questions you have and address any of your concerns.

Fear of going to the dentist is quite common and as a result many people suffer pain or dental disease that is unnecessary but it is understandable. 10 Tips for Good Oral Hygiene and Healthy Smiles

Most toothaches are predicatable and preventable with a good oral hygiene regimen. Regular checkups and following these oral hygiene tips will maintain your oral health and help you keep your teeth for life.

Don’t wait until you have to visit the dentist to go to the dentist.

When it comes to dental hygiene and oral health the truth is most people don’t give it much thought, until they have a problem and they have to visit the dentist. The sad fact is most people could avoid expensive dental procedures by following a simple oral hygiene routine and the best thing parents can do for their kids is teach them to start their routine early in life, so it becomes a habit.

Oral health: Brush up on dental care basics

The great misconception is, all you need to do is brush your teeth in the morning and before going to bed and floss every now and again and that’s it. But if you want to avoid getting implants or false teeth and want to keep your natural teeth for life, good oral hygiene is where it starts and hopefully finishes.

What most people don’t realise is, Oral health care is also very important for your overall health and well-being and not just preventing oral disease and decay, as you will see below.

Poor oral health not only affects the health of your gums and teeth but it also impacts on your general health with links to heart disease and stroke to name just two important side effects.

Here at Garners Dental we are very focused on helping our patients, especially the young ones, implement a preventative oral care program because the earlier you start the better it is for you. Our goal is to help each of our patients obtain an optimal level of oral health.

Children should be taught about the benefits of brushing and flossing but many adults weren't taught about it as kids. But it is never too late to start. Read this artyicle for more healthy oral tips.

It’s often the small things that make a big difference. Oral Hygiene is easy to do at home and together with your regular checkups witll keep your mouth healthy.

What Is Good Oral Hygiene? – The things you should do.

A thorough oral health care routine should include brushing twice daily at least and flossing after meals to remove all food particles that feed the bacteria that create plaque. This will maintain a clean tooth surface and stop the plaque from creating the acid that eats your teeth and causes tooth decay (cavities).

Regular visits to the dentist for preventative care check-ups and a professional clean are also vital in any oral health routine.

See your dentist at least twice a year

Every dentist will tell you getting a check-up every 6 months is recommended but it is not just recommended, it’s really important if you want to have healthy teeth and gums and reduce your dental bills. A regular and inexpensive dental check-up enables the dentist to diagnosis potential oral health issues in their early stages and take preventative action as well as give you a professional clean.

It’s an old adage but still very true: Prevention is always better than a cure.

Oral Hygiene Basics – The things you need to avoid

a cartoon illustrating getting a regular checkup and fixing cavities when they are small and probably painless.

Having a regular checkup and addressing tooth decay before it causes pain will keep your mouth healthy and your dental costs down.

Tooth decay (cavities) is a common problem for people of all ages. For children, untreated cavities can cause pain, absence from school, difficulty concentrating on learning, and poor appearance, all problems that greatly affect quality of life and ability to succeed. Children often do not receive timely treatment for tooth decay and are more likely to suffer from these problems.

Video goes here “Why You Get Cavities,”

Periodontal Disease
Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection caused by bacteria under the

gum tissue that begin to destroy the gums and bone. Teeth become loose, chewing becomes difficult, and teeth may have to be extracted. Gum disease may also be related to damage elsewhere in the body; recent studies point to associations between oral infections and diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and preterm, low-weight births. Research is underway to further examine these connections.

Other oral health care tips

It's important to get children used to drinking water early in life not sodas or fruit juices which contain sugar and cause tooth decay

Water, the healthy, FREE alternative to soda and fruit juices.

Many children and adults miss out on doing the simple measures that have been proven effective in preventing oral diseases and reducing dental care costs. For example, fluoride prevents tooth decay.

A simple way for you and your children to get the fluoride you need is to drink tap water because the water in Australia is fluoridated unlike some other countries. Our tap water is excellent quality, as good as many bottled waters which often don’t contain fluoride.

Brushing for oral health

Second, use a toothpaste that contains fluoride. For very young children, for example, if your child is less than 7 years old, put only a pea-sized amount on their toothbrush. Seek advice from a dentist or other health care professional before introducing fluoride toothpaste to children under 2 years of age.

Proper tooth brushing is critically important to good dental hygiene. Parents can help their children practice proper tooth brushing by starting to clean teeth early, using the right amount of fluoride toothpaste, supervising tooth brushing, and talking to Dr Bassi about a child’s specific fluoride needs. Dr Bassi was a senior dentist at the Dental Hospital specialising in children’s dental care.

How Does Smoking Affect My Oral Health?

Smokers are up to six times more likely to develop gum disease (periodontal disease), which can lead to serious problems such as causing teeth to fall out.

These days most people are aware that smoking is bad for their health. It can cause numerous medical problems and, in some cases, it can lead to fatal diseases. However, many people don’t realise the damage that smoking does to their mouth, gums and teeth.

Smoking can lead to tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss, and in more severe cases mouth cancer.

The gums are affected because smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, so the infected gums don’t heal. Smoking causes people to have more dental plaque and causes gum disease to get worse more quickly than with non-smokers. Gum disease is still the most common cause of tooth loss in adults.
