The importance of regular dental check-up.

Every patient has heard their dentist talk about the importance of having regular dental check-ups and we know that many people wonder if they are really necessary? But those that do have them, learn the reason why. It is because they rarely have unexpected problems. Their oral health is good, and that is mainly due to the regular check-ups.

Benefits of seeing a dentist

For example, it is possible to have dental problems and not experience any pain, making some think that they don’t need a check-up. When you have a dental check-up we do more than clean your teeth. Check-ups are often a preventive appointment to determine the current oral health of patients. More important, check-ups not only support good oral health, they also support their overall general health.

How many dental check-ups should you have per year?

The general answer to this question is at least two. Getting a minimum of two dental exams per year is a critical part of preventive dental care for everyone, even those who are very regular with their dental hygiene practices at home.

Here’s why.

Benefits of Teeth Cleaning

Plaque needs to be removed from teeth frequently (see our article “Why You Get Cavities”). If it isn’t removed often enough, it can harden into tartar and lead to cavities and gum disease. Even those who brush and floss daily – and do a great job at these tasks – can’t remove tartar. Dental instruments and tools are needed to deep clean your teeth, which is where having a twice yearly check-up comes in.

Dental check-ups help prevent issues like cavities and gum disease. And, for existing cavities or gum disease, check-ups can catch them at the start of their development and treat them at the beginning, avoiding progression into more serious issues.

Dental Examinations also give your dentist a chance to detect other oral health problems early, which is when they are most treatable with minimum procedures, preventing them from escalating into something more severe and therefore more costly to treat.

In addition to maintaining your oral health, having regular dental exams provides other health benefits. Since signs and symptoms of other systemic diseases, such as diabetes and lupus, can show up in the mouth first, a dental exam can be the first indication of these diseases, enabling you to seek medical treatment in the early stages.

What to Expect at a Routine Dental Exam

First, the dentist or hygienist will clean your teeth and check for cavities and any signs of gum disease. The dentist will also evaluate your risk of developing other oral problems and check your face, neck and mouth for abnormalities. If necessary, dental X-rays or other diagnostic procedures may also be performed.

We’ll also discuss your diet, oral hygiene habits and other lifestyle factors that can affect oral health. And, of course, we’ll answer any questions you have and address any of your concerns.
